What is Qigong?
Qigong (氣功) is a health-supporting and restorative movement system with roots deep in Chinese philosophy and medicine. Qigong combines physical exercises, breathing techniques and meditative practices.
The concept of qi (氣) – often translated as life force or vital energy – runs through the entirety of Chinese philosophy and culture. The philosophical understanding of a single primordial energy has existed for thousands of years. Qi is regarded as the force underlying the birth, existence, transformation and disappearance of all things.
Qi fills and permeates the entire universe, while also representing the inner vitality and life-giving force within all living beings. In modern Western terminology, qi is often translated as energy, though it refers to a specific type of life energy characterised by strength and vitality.
In Chinese medicine, qi manifests in both material and immaterial forms within the human body – as tissues and bodily fluids, but also as mental qualities, emotions and consciousness. The smooth and unobstructed flow of qi through the body’s meridians is believed to ensure good health and longevity. However, environment, lifestyle and external influences can disturb this balance and affect overall wellbeing.
The Chinese word gong (功) refers to learning or training that requires effort, time and dedication. Qigong therefore represents the cultivation and mastery of qi through consistent practice.
Practising qigong develops focus, determination and inner strength. It is often said that the true effects of qigong become noticeable after practising daily for at least 100 consecutive days. Although regular practice brings the greatest benefit, a common saying remains: even occasional pra
ctice is better than none.
Qi Massage
Qi massage is a therapeutic massage based on the philosophy of Chinese medicine and designed to support overall wellbeing and health.
Through qi massage, the body’s natural self-healing capacity can be strengthened. The aim is to ensure the unobstructed flow of energy within the body. According to the meridian theory of Chinese medicine, blockages in the flow of qi – life energy – may lead to pain, discomfort and eventually illness.
During a qi massage, the main energy channels and acupuncture points on the feet and back are stimulated in a specific sequence. The treatment has a relaxing effect, stimulates the circulation of energy and blood, and helps reduce pain and stagnation of qi.
An important part of the practice is finding the correct resting position of the body – aligning limbs and energy channels properly. These principles can also be applied in everyday life to support health, strengthen immunity and improve overall wellbeing.
Qi massage is suitable for most people and has no significant contraindications. However, it is not recommended if there are open wounds or recent injuries in the leg area (fractures, sprains, swelling).
Duration: 60 minutes.
Qi massage may help to:
• improve circulation and balance the body’s energy flow
• relieve fatigue, anxiety and nervous tension
• reduce headaches and muscle pain, including fibromyalgia symptoms
• support people with various chronic conditions
• relieve stress
• reduce swelling and pain
• support recovery from injuries
• improve metabolism and strengthen the immune system
Places are limited.
