MICROBIOME – OUR GUT INHABITANTS

Our gut health is closely linked to our overall well-being. Often, the inner workings of our digestive system give early signs of imbalances and illnesses long before we notice them ourselves. However, stress, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle can disrupt the delicate balance of our gut and its resident bacteria, which can significantly affect our health.
The collection of microorganisms that live on and inside the human body is called the microbiome.
Trillions of microorganisms live in our digestive tract, forming what is known as the gut microbiome.
Not all gut bacteria have a positive effect on our health, which is why an imbalance between protective and harmful bacteria can lead to health problems.

Description

Our laboratory research is continually advancing, and BIOVIS has introduced innovative developments in the field of gut analyses. In particular, there are several improvements in microbiome testing that can help guide you toward a healthier gut. Through microbiome analysis, our lab can gather valuable information about the condition of your intestines. The test can detect imbalances in the microbiome, which can then be addressed.

First, the question arises: what is the microbiome, and how does it affect our body? The microbiome refers to all the microorganisms living on and in the human body. Our digestive tract is home to trillions of microbes, collectively known as the gut microbiome. Not all intestinal bacteria have a positive impact on our health, so a disruption in the balance between protective and harmful bacteria can lead to health problems.

Digestion: Bacteria in the gut support the digestion of complex carbohydrates and fibers. They also convert fibers into short-chain fatty acids, which serve as an energy source for intestinal cells and promote gut motility.
Vitamin production: Our gut bacteria produce various vitamins that support our daily nutrition, such as vitamins B1, B2, B6, and K.
Detoxification: Some intestinal bacteria can neutralize toxic substances. Thus, the microbiome plays a role in detoxifying environmental chemicals.
Immune system: The gut bacteria in our intestinal lining act as a microbial barrier against pathogens that enter the digestive tract, preventing harmful microorganisms from invading the body. Additionally, short-chain fatty acids may reduce gut permeability to pathogens.

When we are exposed to unhealthy conditions for a long time, we may begin to perceive them as normal. Yet, our gut often signals us about an unhealthy lifestyle in everyday life and should not be ignored.

Common symptoms include frequent gas, cramps, digestive discomfort, difficult bowel movements, or bloating. While an occasional bloated stomach is not unusual, it may indicate a food intolerance and thus provide insight into our overall health. Because everything in our body is interconnected, gut issues can also manifest in other organs—for example, irritated skin may point to gluten intolerance or a similar condition.
