OVERVIEW

Probiotics are live microorganisms, primarily beneficial bacteria, that can be beneficial to our digestive system health when consumed in adequate amounts. These microorganisms help maintain gut balance by increasing the number of good bacteria in the digestive tract and helping to fight harmful bacteria. Here are some reasons why people may use probiotics:

  1. Supporting Digestion: Probiotics aid digestion by helping break down food and absorb nutrients. This can help alleviate digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis).

  2. Strengthening the Immune System: The digestive tract constitutes a large portion of the human immune system, and probiotics can help strengthen this system, protecting the body from pathogens.

  3. Supporting Antibiotic Treatment: Taking antibiotics can destroy both harmful and beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract, often causing digestive issues. Taking probiotics during an antibiotic course can help reduce the risk of digestive disorders.

  4. Preventing Allergies and Immune System Diseases: Studies suggest that probiotics may have potential in preventing allergies, asthma, and other immune system diseases.

Which probiotics to take depends on an individual’s specific needs and health condition. Here are some common probiotic strains and their benefits:

  1. Lactobacillus: This is one of the most common probiotic bacteria, which helps balance the digestive tract and supports the immune system. Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most well-known Lactobacillus species.

  2. Bifidobacterium: These bacteria are important for digestive health and help prevent constipation. Bifidobacterium lactis is one of the most common Bifidobacterium species.

  3. Saccharomyces boulardii: This is a yeast probiotic strain that may help alleviate diarrhea, particularly that associated with antibiotic use.

  4. Streptococcus thermophilus: This probiotic bacterium helps balance the digestive tract and supports the immune system.

If you are considering taking probiotics, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to receive advice and choose the probiotics that suit your health condition and individual needs. A healthcare provider can recommend the correct dosage and type of probiotics based on your needs.
