Lactoferrin is a very versatile immune protein with numerous antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, which also performs functions in iron metabolism. It is especially concentrated in protective breast milk. As part of the innate immune response, it is present in many body secretions, mucous membranes and special defense cells (neutrophil granulocytes), which are released during infections and inflammations.

Lactoferrin is obtained from cow’s milk or whey. If the extracted protein is not thoroughly purified, it may be contaminated with endotoxins and other milk-derived contaminants and therefore unusable by the body.

The biological activity of lactoferrin is primarily based on the fact that it binds highly efficiently to iron, as well as pathogens and interacts with various immune cells and receptors. As an iron-binding protein of the transferrin group, it deprives harmful bacteria of a vital mineral as well, thereby preventing their reproduction. At the same time, it supports the absorption and distribution of iron in the body. Lactoferrin also binds directly to viruses, bacteria and bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides, LPS) and neutralizes them in this way. In contrast, probiotic bacteria are actually encouraged in their growth, which means that lactoferrin supports the gut microbiome and gut health is positively affected.
